Meet Tess Holliday (aka Tess Munster). She’s a UK size 24 and the first model of her size and height to be signed to a major modelling agency.
She’s also the woman behind the #EffYourBeautyStandards movement. And she wants women to celebrate their bodies, whatever their shape.
The 29-year-old from Mississippi announced her deal with MiLK Model Management’s plus-size division Curves last week, telling New York Daily News: ‘I feel like it’s breaking ground. This is a milestone.’
The agency’s plus-size models are typically 5ft 8in and taller, and are between UK sizes 12 and 22. Tess is a size 24 and is 5ft 5in tall.
The agency came across Tess on Instagram. Owner and director of MiLK Anna Shillinglaw explained: ‘I started following her, and saw how many followers she had—more than most models. She’s such an important role model for so many women.’
Her social media fame is partly down to her #EffYourBeautyStandards campaign, which she started four years ago, where she posts pictures that show off her curves, combined with positive body image mantras.
For her, every body is a beautiful body.
Tess, who works out four days a week with a trainer, says she constantly faces criticism for being plus-sized. She was forced to leave school at 17 because of bullying and still receives hundreds of negative comments online every day.
She told HuffPost: ‘I understand not everyone understands what I’m about. But to me it’s such a simple concept. It’s all about loving your body regardless of your size and chasing your dreams.’
Shillinglaw agrees: ‘I see a lot of negative comments as well, and I ignore those. I know she’s healthy and active.’
So far, Tess’s body positive campaign has garnered 638k likes on Facebook and 349k followers on Instagram. And she’s not finished yet.
As she wrote below a photo of her modelling black lingerie: ‘Does it bother you that a fat body like mine exists in the world? That this body makes me money, brings my partner (& myself) joy & for some of you, is your “worst case scenario”? Heaven forbid. F*** what you’ve heard about me. I’m not going anywhere #tessmunster #tessholliday #effyourbeautystandards’
